🧬 Research paper
Semantic reconstruction of continuous language from non-invasive brain recordings: Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have created a semantic decoder, an artificial intelligence system that can transform a person's brain activity into a continuous stream of text.
The system is noninvasive since it uses a transformer model similar to those used by Open AI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard and does not require surgical implants.
After listening to hours of podcasts in an fMRI scanner, participants' brain activity is recorded while listening to a new tale or imagining telling a story, allowing the system to create equivalent text from brain activity alone.
This raises a great question: Can this new tech be used for a range of semantic tasks, such as speech recognition and communication for individuals with speech disabilities?
